Rest is Not Laziness, It Is Preparation for Connection
Your Presence Is the Gift
The holidays ask so much of us.
More doing, more rushing, more showing up with a smile even when your body is asking for rest.
But the truth is simple:
Your presence, not your performance, is what makes the season feel magical.
Sometimes that becomes clearest in the quietest, most ordinary moments.
Ollie and Court’s private moment.
It was late.
The house finally quiet.
They stepped outside with two mugs of hot cocoa, the kind made with too many marshmallows, and sat together under the cold, bright stars.
For a long moment neither spoke, just sipped and breathed and listened to the winter air settle around them.
Then he said softly,
“Do you remember our first Christmas together? That tiny tree that leaned to the left no matter how many times I fixed it?”
She laughed, the kind of laugh that comes from somewhere deeper.
“You mean the tree we decorated with popcorn because we couldn’t afford ornaments yet? That tree?”
He nudged her shoulder.
“That one. We didn’t have much back then, but I swear it felt like we had everything.”
She was quiet for a second, looking up at the stars.
“We did. And you know… we still do. We just get so busy we forget.”
He took her hand under the blanket.
“What do you think it’ll be like thirty years from now? When the kids bring their kids over? When the house is louder than we ever imagined?”
She smiled.
“I hope it’s like this. Not the noise or the rushing. Just… this. Sitting beside you. Warm cocoa. Sharing old stories. Dreaming up new ones.”
He whispered,
“Then let’s make sure we don’t wait thirty years for moments like this.”
And for a few breaths, the world felt softer.
Their shoulders dropped.
Their nervous systems settled.
And without saying it, they both knew:
This is the part of the holidays their future selves will remember.
Not the lists.
Not the decorating.
Not the exhaustion.
This.
The Reframe for Your Heart
You don’t create the magic by doing more,
You create it by being the peace they’re waiting for.
Two deep breaths.
Three seconds with your hand on your heart.
One tiny moment of presence…
And suddenly everything feels warmer, inside you, and around you.
This season, let the lights be imperfect,
let the schedule be flexible,
let the house be lived-in,
and let you be the reason the room softens.
Because you are.
